North Sikkim Guide- What to eat?

No good memories are complete without good food. Especially when you are traveling to a new place, you can’t experience the place fully without trying the local cuisines and their specialties. With that in mind, here are some food items that we recommend you to try in North Sikkim:

Yak meat

If you are a non-vegetarian and have never tried Yak meat in your life; well there is always a first time for everything. Yaks are very common and open-grazed in North Sikkim. They are used as an important source of milk and meat by the locals. Being low in cholesterol yet high in protein, it is a staple food in North Sikkim. You can easily find it at most of the restaurants around the area. You can enjoy it with some warm rice or roti.

Nakima Nakima

is an edible orchid that is quite popular in Sikkim. It is a side dish that is usually cooked with tomatoes and onions or even with meat. Since it is quite difficult to find this dish elsewhere in the country, might as well try the local flavors while you have the chance. The vegetable has a slightly bitter taste to it but nothing overpowering.

Gundruk ko Jhol

Basically, fermented spinach, Gundruk is a traditional dish that is cooked as a sour broth. It pairs very well with other veggies and some rice. You’d definitely want to sip on this healthy hot soup in the cold weather and enjoy the tangy flavors. The method of cooking is Sikkimese style so a must-try for visitors.
