Travelling to North Sikkim - Local Guide Where to Visit

Being one of the most beautiful hill stations in the country, Sikkim is a Traveler's paradise and a must-visit place for nature lovers. If you are eager to enjoy the snow-capped mountains and chilly weather with a steaming cup of butter tea or coffee, your must-see district in the state is North Sikkim. Although it covers the largest area out of all the districts in our state, it happens to be the least populated and one can witness the untouched natural landscapes, pristine water bodies, and glaciers in this region. However, to truly enjoy the beauty of this place, one has to come prepared.

Where to Visit?

Seven Sister Waterfalls

Who doesn’t love a mesmerizing waterfall, right? Located just 32 kms from Gangtok on the North Sikkim Highway, you can make a brief stop at this waterfall and enjoy hot momos with masala chai whilst soaking up the beauty of this waterfall. Travelers can find a cafeteria, souvenirs shops, and waiting shed to enjoy the natural ambiance of the place.

Lachen

As you drive further north, at an altitude of 8500 ft lies Lachen, a small area with a market and plenty of homestays and hotels. For people who are traveling to see Gurudongmar Lake or Tso Lhamu lake, this is the area where they take an overnight halt as Lachen is the closest inhabited area that provides access to these places. Another reason for the halt is to let the visitors adjust to the high altitude as they venture onto higher elevations. Therefore, having a backup to ensure you breathe easy is of utmost importance.

Chopta Valley

Located about 30 mins drive away from Lachen, Chopta valley is the perfect place for adventure lovers. If you are keen on trekking, this can be your first try at walking through the high-altitude regions. The valley is home to dazzling water bodies and rare species of flora and fauna. The green meadows are contrasted by snow-capped mountains that you will be able to enjoy as you hike through the valley. For a spiritual experience unique to the Buddhist culture of Sikkim, visitors can visit the nearby Thangu monastery and soak in the calm and heaven-like aura of the place.

Gurudongmar Lake

Any list of must-visit places in North Sikkim is not complete without a mention of Gurudongmar Lake. This spectacular lake situated at a height of 17,800 ft, is one of the highest lakes in the world. The lake is considered to be sacred by Buddhists and Hindus. The view of turquoise blue water or the frozen lake (depending upon the season); and the surrounding snow-capped mountains is simply mesmerizing. However, it is also very common for visitors to feel sick in the region due to low oxygen levels and high altitudes. Making it all the more important to carry a can of O2 HIMALAYA in your backpack.

Lachung

After your trip to Gurudongmar lake, if you are on a 2 night 3 day trip to North Sikkim, your driver will most likely take you to Lachung. Nestled on the banks of the Lachung chu (river) which divides the village into two parts, the popular hill resort is famed for its apples, peaches and apricots.

Yumthang Valley and Zero Point

When you leave from Lachung, you will first cross the Shinghba Rhododendron Sanctuary, then Yumthang and the last stop would be the Zero Point. It’s best that you travel to Zero Point first and explore Yumthang Valley during your return journey.
